Day 1 — Almaty

Ride up to Medeu and the Shymbulak cable car (snow on the peaks even in July), then Kok-Tobe hill for sunset and dinner. Buy a Kyrgyz eSIM or plan to get a SIM in Karakol; Kazakh SIMs roam expensively across the border. If you arrive late, skip Shymbulak and walk Panfilov Park and the Green Bazaar.

Day 2 — Charyn Canyon and Kolsai lakes

Leave early: Charyn Canyon's Valley of Castles is ≈200 km (3–3.5 h) east of Almaty, a 3 km walk down to the river. Continue ≈100 km to Saty village, base for the Kolsai lakes and the sunken forest of Kaindy. Overnight in a Saty guesthouse; book ahead in summer.

Day 3 — Over the Kegen pass to Karakol

Morning walk at Lower Kolsai, then drive via Kegen to the border. The Kazakh Kegen post has operated 24/7 since August 2025 and is open to all nationalities; the Kyrgyz Karkyra post works daytime hours (08:00–21:00 in July–August 2026, shorter at other times by driver reports) — arrive by early afternoon. After the border the road descends through the Karkyra jailoo to Tyup and Karakol. Most rental cars cannot cross borders, so arrange a Kazakh driver to the border and a Kyrgyz driver after it, or a cross-border transfer.

Day 4 — Altyn-Arashan or Karakol valley

Take a Soviet 4x4 up the rough 14 km track to Altyn-Arashan hot springs at ≈2,600 m (transfers: arashantransfer.com), or hike the Karakol valley. Back in town, see the wooden Holy Trinity Cathedral, the Dungan mosque and try ashlan-fu.

Day 5 — South shore: Jeti-Oguz, Skazka, eagle hunters

Drive west along the quieter south shore. Stop at the red “Seven Bulls” rocks of Jeti-Oguz, the Skazka (Fairy Tale) canyon, and book an eagle-hunting demonstration near Bokonbaevo. Sleep in a lakeside yurt camp.

Day 6 — Cholpon-Ata on the north shore

Round the west end of the lake via Balykchy to Cholpon-Ata. Swim in July–August (water 19–23 °C), visit the open-air petroglyphs at sunset, or take a boat trip.

Day 7 — Burana Tower and Bishkek

Drive ≈260 km through the Boom gorge, stopping at the 11th-century Burana Tower. Fly out of Bishkek's Manas airport, or continue ≈240 km (4–5 h incl. border) back to Almaty — see Almaty to Bishkek. Returning to Almaty the same day is long; add an eighth day if you can.

Winter variant (November – March)

The Kegen pass is high and can be snowy; the Kyrgyz post keeps daytime hours. A safer winter plan: Day 1 Almaty and Shymbulak; Day 2 Almaty → Korday → Bishkek (≈240 km); Day 3 Bishkek → Karakol along the north shore (≈400 km, about 7 h in winter); Days 4–5 skiing at Karakol (ski pass 1,300 som weekdays / 1,600 som weekends, 2025 prices) — see skiing in Kyrgyzstan; Day 6 Jeti-Oguz and a hot-spring soak; Day 7 fly Karakol → Almaty with Asman Airlines (operated Fridays and Sundays from December 2025, ≈35 min — check the current schedule). The direct Almaty–Karakol bus via Kegen is advertised as year-round, but delays are possible after snowfall.

Myth vs fact

FAQ

Can foreigners cross the border at Kegen–Karkyra?

Yes. Since August 2025 the Kegen checkpoint is open to citizens of all countries, not only Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The Kyrgyz Karkyra side works daytime hours (08:00–21:00 in summer 2026), so plan to arrive by early afternoon and check current hours.

How far is Karakol from Almaty?

About 400–430 km via Kegen–Karkyra, 7–9 hours including the border. The direct bus costs 1,200 som. Via Korday and Bishkek it is ≈640 km and 10–11 hours. In winter, Asman Airlines flights take about 35 minutes (check schedule).

How much does a 7-day Almaty and Issyk-Kul trip cost?

Roughly $350–550 per person on buses and in guesthouses, $800–1,300 with private drivers and mid-range hotels, and $1,500–2,500 in comfort, excluding international flights (2026 estimates).

Can I do this route by public transport?

Partly. Use the direct Almaty – Karakol bus, marshrutkas around Issyk-Kul and to Bishkek. Charyn, Kolsai and Jeti-Oguz are hard without a car — book day tours or a driver for those legs.

When is the best time for this itinerary?

Mid-June to mid-September, when the Kegen pass is clear and lake water reaches 19–23 °C in July–August. In November–March use the winter variant via Korday or the Almaty – Karakol flight.
