Crossing the Korday / Ak-Jol border
The crossing is the busiest on the Kazakh–Kyrgyz border. Buses stop before the border; passengers walk through the Kazakh exit and Kyrgyz entry halls with their luggage and reboard on the other side. Shared-taxi passengers usually do the same while the car crosses. Waiting time ranges from 20 minutes to 1–2 hours; summer Fridays and holiday weekends are the worst. Tips:
- Have your passport ready and, if you need one, the printed e-visa — check it is valid for land entry at Ak-Jol.
- Citizens of Kazakhstan and Russia can usually cross with national ID / internal passport (check before travel).
- Keep some tenge and som in cash; there are exchange booths on both sides but rates are weak.
- Buy a Kyrgyz SIM or switch on your eSIM after the border — see SIM and eSIM.
From Almaty airport straight to Bishkek
If you land at Almaty International Airport, you don't need to go into the city: book a private transfer or take a taxi to Sayran. The airport is on the north-east side of Almaty, so allow about 4 hours plus border time to Bishkek. For night arrivals, book ahead via Plan my trip. Combining Almaty and Bishkek also opens open-jaw routes like Almaty → Bishkek → Issyk-Kul → Karakol → Almaty.
Going directly to Issyk-Kul or Karakol
- Almaty → Karakol by bus via Kegen / Karkyra: direct bus since 7 September 2025, 1,200 som, declared year-round — skips Bishkek.
- Almaty → Karakol by air: Asman Airlines on Fridays and Sundays, ≈35 minutes (since 5 December 2025).
- By car via Korday and Bishkek: Almaty → Cholpon-Ata ≈ 7–8 h.

Bishkek → Almaty
The return works the same way: buses and shared taxis from Bishkek's Western bus station area. Check out the same day if you have a flight: allow at least 6–7 hours from Bishkek to an Almaty departure.
Myth vs fact
Myth: "The border takes half a day." Fact: on an ordinary weekday morning the walk-through often takes under an hour; queues build on summer weekends. Plan the rest of your trip with getting around Kyrgyzstan.
