Jeti-Oguz and Skazka are the two best-known red-rock landscapes of Issyk-Kul: the Jeti-Oguz cliffs lie 25–28 km (about 40 minutes) west of Karakol, while Skazka ("Fairy Tale") canyon sits on the south shore near Tosor, about 120 km from Karakol and 300 km (5 hours) from Bishkek. Both are easy stops on a loop around the lake and need only 2–4 hours each.
Jeti-Oguz: Seven Bulls and Broken Heart
At the entrance to the Jeti-Oguz gorge a row of eroded red sandstone cliffs resembles seven bulls; nearby a split rock is called the Broken Heart. A short climb on the ridge opposite gives the classic view. Further up the gorge (about 1–2 hours on foot or by car on a dirt road) the Kok-Jaiyk meadow, known as the Valley of Flowers, has summer yurts and horse riding. An old Soviet sanatorium with mineral springs stands at the mouth of the gorge. See horse trekking.
Skazka canyon
Skazka is a maze of wind-eroded clay and sandstone ridges in red, orange and ochre, a few kilometres from the lake. Formations are given names — the Great Wall of China, the Dragon — and paths lead to viewpoints with the lake and snow peaks behind. It is hot and shadeless in summer; go early or late.

Where to stay and costs
At Jeti-Oguz there are guesthouses and the sanatorium (roughly 1,500–3,500 som per person) and summer yurts in the upper valley (2,000–3,500 som with meals). Entry tickets at both sites are small (≈100–300 som; check).
Myth vs fact
Myth: “Jeti-Oguz and Skazka are next to each other.” Fact: they are about 100 km apart — Jeti-Oguz is in a gorge near Karakol, Skazka is on the south shore. Plan a full day to see both.
Both appear in our 3-day Issyk-Kul itinerary. For the whole lake read the Issyk-Kul guide.
