Karakol is a town of about 80,000 people at the eastern end of Issyk-Kul, 400 km (6 hours) from Bishkek and 380 km from Almaty, and the main base for trekking and skiing in Kyrgyzstan. From here you reach the Ala-Kul lake trek, the hot springs of Altyn-Arashan, the red rocks of Jeti-Oguz and the Karakol ski base, all within 15–60 km.
Why go to Karakol
Karakol mixes Russian colonial streets, a wooden Orthodox cathedral, a Dungan mosque built in Chinese style without metal nails, and a Sunday livestock market. But most visitors come for what lies behind the town: five valleys of the Terskey Ala-Too (Karakol, Altyn-Arashan, Jeti-Oguz, Chon-Kyzyl-Suu, Jyrgalan) with glaciers, alpine lakes and peaks over 5,000 m. In winter the same mountains host Central Asia's best-value ski resort and freeride terrain.
