Central Asia in 2 Weeks: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan in One Route

14-day Central Asia route: Almaty, Karakol, Song-Kul yurts, Osh, Tashkent and Samarkand. Day-by-day legs, borders, transport and a $800–5,000 budget table.

Quick answerChecked 02.11.2026
  • Route: Almaty (2) → Karakol (2) → Issyk-Kul south shore (1) → Song-Kul (2) → Bishkek (1) → Osh (2) → Tashkent (1) → Samarkand (2), one way, works in reverse.
  • Three borders: Kegen–Karkyra (KZ→KG, daytime on the Kyrgyz side), Dostyk/Dustlik near Osh (KG→UZ), plus one domestic flight Bishkek – Osh (≈1 h).
  • Budget per person, excluding international flights: ≈$800–1,200 budget, $1,800–2,800 mid-range, $3,500–5,000 comfort (2026 estimates, check).
  • Season: mid-June to mid-September for Song-Kul; Samarkand is hot (35–40 °C) in July–August, so June or early September is the sweet spot.
  • Book ahead: Song-Kul yurt camp and driver, Afrosiyob train tickets Tashkent – Samarkand, Bishkek – Osh flight.

Two weeks is enough to cross three Central Asian countries: start in Almaty, spend about 8 days in Kyrgyzstan (Karakol, Issyk-Kul, Song-Kul, Osh), and finish with Tashkent and Samarkand in Uzbekistan. The route has two land borders and one short internal flight, no drive longer than ≈300 km, and costs roughly $1,800–2,800 per person mid-range, excluding international flights (2026 estimates). Fly into Almaty and out of Samarkand or Tashkent — or reverse everything.

Days 1–2: Almaty

Almaty is the region's best-connected airport and often the cheapest entry point. Spend a day in the city (Medeu, Shymbulak, Kok-Tobe) and a day at Charyn Canyon or Big Almaty Lake. If Kazakhstan alone versus Kyrgyzstan is still on your mind, read Kyrgyzstan vs Kazakhstan.

Days 3–5: Karakol and Issyk-Kul

Cross the Kegen–Karkyra border straight to the east end of Issyk-Kul. Since August 2025 foreigners can use this crossing; the Kyrgyz side works daytime hours, so leave Almaty early. In Karakol hike or take a 4x4 to Altyn-Arashan's hot springs, then drive the south shore past Jeti-Oguz and the Skazka canyon to a lakeside yurt camp near Bokonbaevo. The shorter version of this section is our Almaty – Issyk-Kul – Karakol 7-day route.

Days 6–8: Song-Kul

Song-Kul lies at 3,016 m and has no hotels — only seasonal yurt camps from mid-June to mid-September. Two nights let you ride a horse along the shore, watch herders bring animals in, and see the night sky. Nights drop to 0–5 °C even in July. How the camps work and what they cost is explained in Song-Kul yurt camps. Return to Bishkek via Kochkor (≈300 km).

Days 9–10: Bishkek and Osh

Spend the morning at Ala-Archa national park, 40 km from Bishkek, and fly to Osh in the evening — about one hour versus 10–12 hours by road. Osh is one of Central Asia's oldest cities: climb Sulaiman-Too, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and walk the Jayma bazaar.

Day 11: Crossing from Osh to Uzbekistan

The Dostyk (Dustlik) crossing is a short taxi ride from Osh. On the Uzbek side continue to Andijan and take a train or shared car over the Kamchik pass to Tashkent (about 5–6 hours). If you prefer to fly, Centrum Air runs regular Osh – Tashkent flights. Uzbekistan uses the sum; withdraw cash or use cards in Tashkent.

Days 12–14: Tashkent and Samarkand

High-speed Afrosiyob trains link Tashkent and Samarkand in about 2–2.5 hours — buy tickets online in advance, they sell out. In Samarkand, see the Registan, Gur-e-Amir and the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis. Have one more day? Add Bukhara (≈1.5 h further by train). Comparing the two countries in depth: Kyrgyzstan vs Uzbekistan.

How much does a 2-week Central Asia trip cost?

Per person, 14 daysBudgetMid-rangeComfort
Accommodation (13 nights)$250–400$600–1,000$1,400–2,200
Ground transport + 1 internal flight$200–330$650–1,050$1,200–1,700
Food$200–280$350–450$550–700
Activities, entries, guides$150–190$200–300$350–400
Total$800–1,200$1,800–2,800$3,500–5,000

Prices are 2026 estimates; check current fares. Private drivers in Kyrgyzstan are the biggest variable — sharing a car between 2–4 people cuts the mid-range total sharply. Yurt camps and village guesthouses usually want cash in som.

Visas and borders

EU, UK and US citizens currently travel visa-free in all three countries (typically 30 days in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, up to 60 days in Kyrgyzstan). Indian citizens get 14 visa-free days in Kazakhstan but need e-visas for Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. Check every rule before booking — see our Kyrgyzstan visa guide.

FAQ

Is 2 weeks enough for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan?

Yes, if you focus: 2 days in Almaty, about 8 in Kyrgyzstan and 3–4 in Tashkent and Samarkand. Use one internal flight (Bishkek – Osh) and an open-jaw ticket, Almaty in and Samarkand or Tashkent out.

How do I cross from Kyrgyzstan to Uzbekistan?

Most travellers use the Dostyk/Dustlik crossing near Osh, then go via Andijan to Tashkent (5–6 h by train or car). Alternatively, fly Osh – Tashkent or Bishkek – Tashkent in about 1–1.5 hours. Check border hours before travelling.

How much does a 2-week Central Asia trip cost?

Around $800–1,200 per person on a budget, $1,800–2,800 mid-range and $3,500–5,000 in comfort, excluding international flights (2026 estimates). Private drivers in Kyrgyzstan and boutique hotels in Samarkand are the biggest costs.

What is the best month for this route?

Mid-to-late June or the first half of September: Song-Kul camps are open (mid-June to mid-September), and Samarkand is warm rather than 38–40 °C as in July–August.

Can I do this route without a driver?

Mostly. Buses link Almaty – Karakol and Bishkek – Kochkor, trains link Tashkent – Samarkand. Song-Kul, Jeti-Oguz and the south shore need a driver or 4x4 for some days; shared taxis help.
