Kyrgyzstan in winter (December–March) means ski days for 1,300–1,600 som (≈$15–18), hot springs at −10 °C, and an Issyk-Kul lake that stays open water all season. Bishkek sits around 0 to −5 °C by day in January, Karakol and the mountains −10 to −15 °C. Bishkek → Karakol is ≈400 km and about 7 hours by road in winter. Everything below is as of 11.2026 — check road and resort status before you travel.

Is Kyrgyzstan worth visiting in winter?

Yes, if you want snow, skiing, thermal water and quiet roads rather than high-mountain trekking. Summer-only places — Song-Kul, the yurt camps, most high passes to Naryn and the Pamir — are closed or impractical from November to May. What stays open: Bishkek, Karakol, the whole Issyk-Kul shore, ski bases, sanatoriums and hot springs, and gorges near the capital such as Ala-Archa. Prices for guesthouses outside the New Year week are usually lower than in July.

Skiing in Kyrgyzstan: Karakol, Jyrgalan and bases near Bishkek

Karakol Ski Base is the main resort, about 12 km above Karakol; the 2025/26 season opened on 6 December 2025 and usually runs to late March. The last published day pass was 1,300 som on weekdays and 1,600 som on weekends. Full details are on our skiing in Kyrgyzstan page.

Jyrgalan (Джергалан), 60 km east of Karakol, is for off-piste riders: cat-skiing runs at roughly 5,000 som per day with a minimum group of six (2026 data, check), and heli-ski weeks are sold by foreign operators. See freeride and cat-skiing. For a weekend from the capital, Chunkurchak and Kashka-Suu are ≈40 minutes away, Orlovka ≈1.5 hours and the Too-Ashuu pass base ≈2.5–3 hours.

Issyk-Kul in winter: does the lake freeze?

Myth: “Issyk-Kul freezes like every mountain lake.” Fact: the lake is salty and very deep, so the open water does not freeze; only shallow bays near the shore can ice over in extreme cold snaps, as happened in January 2023. Winter on the lake is about sanatoriums, warm pools and empty beaches with a view of the snowy Kungey and Terskey ranges. Our Issyk-Kul in winter guide has water and air temperatures by month.

Hot springs in winter

Thermal water is the best part of a cold-season trip. Issyk-Ata is ≈75 km from Bishkek; near Karakol you have the Ak-Suu (Teploklyuchenka) pools ≈12 km out and the Jeti-Oguz sanatorium ≈25 km out. Altyn-Arashan's wild springs sit at ≈2,600 m — reachable in winter only by 4x4 or a 5–6 hour hike in snow. Read more in wellness and hot springs.

Ala-Archa in snow

Ala-Archa National Park is ≈40 km south of Bishkek and becomes a snow park from December. Since May 2025 private cars have to stop at the gate and visitors continue by electric shuttle — confirm the winter schedule on arrival. A walk to the Ak-Sai waterfall in winter needs crampons or microspikes; higher routes are for guided groups.

Winter festivals: Salbuurun and eagle hunting

Winter is hunting season for golden eagles, and festivals of traditional hunting (salbuurun: eagles, taigan hounds, archery on horseback) are held on the south shore of Issyk-Kul near Bokonbaevo. In 2026 a winter nomad games day took place there on 21 February. Exact 2027 dates are announced only a few weeks ahead — see our events calendar 2027 and nomad culture page.

FAQ

Is Kyrgyzstan good to visit in winter?

Yes, from December to March for skiing, hot springs and snowy landscapes. Ski passes in Karakol cost 1,300–1,600 som, Issyk-Kul does not freeze, and Bishkek stays around 0 to −5 °C. High-altitude places like Song-Kul and yurt camps are closed until late May.

When does the ski season start in Kyrgyzstan?

Usually in early-to-mid December. The 2025/26 season at Karakol opened on 6 December 2025 and runs to late March or early April depending on snow. Bases near Bishkek such as Chunkurchak open when there is enough natural snow, usually also in December.

Does Issyk-Kul freeze in winter?

No. The open lake stays ice-free because it is deep and slightly salty. Only shallow bays near the shore can freeze briefly during extreme cold, as in January 2023. Swimming is only for winter-swimming enthusiasts; warm pools at sanatoriums are the practical alternative.

Is the Kegen border crossing open in winter?

Possibly, but check. Since September 2025 a Karakol – Almaty bus via Kegen – Karkyra is declared year-round and the checkpoint was reported to move to 24/7 work. Snow can still close the plateau road; confirm the day before or use the Bishkek route or Almaty – Karakol flights.

How cold is Karakol in January?

Daytime is usually −5 to −10 °C, nights −15 to −20 °C, colder at the ski base above 2,300 m. Sunny days are common, so it feels milder than the numbers suggest. Pack thermals, a down jacket and boots with good grip.
