Why go to Ala-Archa

No other capital in the region has glaciers this close. In a single day from Bishkek you can walk to a waterfall, see ibex on scree slopes and look at 4,000-m faces used by Kyrgyz mountaineers for training. In winter the lower valley is a snowshoeing and ski-touring area, and the park hosts climbers working on technical routes. See mountaineering in Kyrgyzstan.

When to go

June to October is best for hiking; the Ratsek trail can hold snow until late June. July–August weekends are busy with Bishkek residents — go on a weekday. Winter (December–March) suits snowshoeing; avalanche risk exists on upper trails. See weather by month.

Where to stay

Most people visit as a day trip from Bishkek. Inside the park there is a basic hotel/alpine camp area near the trailhead and, since 2025, a yurt camp; the Ratsek hut offers very simple mountaineering-style beds or tent space (prices change; check). Picnic areas with gas stoves and grills replaced open fires, which are banned.

Myth vs fact

Myth: “Without a car you cannot get deep into Ala-Archa now.” Fact: free electric shuttles carry visitors from the checkpoint to any point of the park road, so the car ban actually makes it easier for those without their own transport.
