Public-holiday dates follow the official calendar as published in late 2026; Islamic holidays depend on the moon and are confirmed by the government shortly before.

Nooruz in Kyrgyzstan: what happens on 21 March

Nooruz (Нооруз, also Nowruz) is the biggest spring holiday. Families cook sumolok — a sweet wheat-sprout paste stirred overnight — and towns set up yurts, food stalls and stages. In Bishkek the main celebration is on Ala-Too Square; in villages you may see kok-boru, wrestling (kurosh) and horse races. Because 21 March 2027 falls on a Sunday, Monday 22 March is a day off — expect full marshrutkas and busy roads to Issyk-Kul.

Eagle-hunting festivals: winter Salbuurun and August Birds of Prey

Hunting with golden eagles (berkut) is a winter activity, so the most authentic events — salbuurun competitions with eagles, taigan hounds and mounted archery — happen in January–February on the south shore of Issyk-Kul. In 2026 one was held near Bokonbaevo on 21 February. In summer, the Birds of Prey festival in the same area is the easy option for tourists. Dates for 2027 are usually confirmed a few weeks ahead. See nomad culture and eagle hunting.

Kymyz festivals and jailoo season

From late May the first kymyz (fermented mare's milk) appears, and villages celebrate with kymyz feasts, horse games and concerts. Events are local and often announced on regional social media rather than official sites. From June herders move to summer pastures (jailoo) and yurt camps open; this is when yurt stays and horse trekking make sense.

World Nomad Games: 2026 recap and what's next

The 6th World Nomad Games ran from 31 August to 6 September 2026, opening in Bishkek with the main sports and ethno-village on Issyk-Kul: kok-boru, horse racing, wrestling, eagle hunting and archery. The Games are held roughly every two years, but the host and dates of the next edition were not announced as of November 2026 (TBA). If you missed them, kok-boru matches happen at Nooruz, Independence Day and village celebrations all year.

Ski season 2026/27 openings

Karakol Ski Base usually opens in early to mid-December depending on snow; the 2025/26 season opened on 6 December 2025 with the JARYK FEST festival. Bases near Bishkek open when natural snow allows. Plan with skiing in Kyrgyzstan and Kyrgyzstan in winter.
