Issyk-Kul weather in winter: water and air by month
The lake sits at ≈1,600 m and acts like a giant heat store, so the shoreline is milder than Bishkek's surroundings or the mountain valleys. Figures below are approximate climate norms for the north shore near Cholpon-Ata; the south shore and Karakol at the eastern end are a few degrees colder.
| Month | Air, day | Air, night | Water (surface) | What it's like |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| December | ≈0 to +3 °C | ≈−6 to −9 °C | ≈4–6 °C | First snow on the shore, ski season opens in Karakol |
| January | ≈−3 to +1 °C | ≈−8 to −12 °C | ≈2–4 °C | Coldest month; shallow bays may ice up in a cold snap |
| February | ≈−1 to +3 °C | ≈−7 to −10 °C | ≈2–3 °C | Sunny, best for snow-and-lake photos |
| March | ≈+4 to +9 °C | ≈−3 to −5 °C | ≈3–5 °C | Thaw on the shore, still skiing above Karakol; Nooruz on 21 March |

Does Issyk-Kul freeze?
Myth: “The lake turns to ice in January.” Fact: Issyk-Kul is about 668 m deep at its deepest and slightly salty, so the open lake stays liquid all winter. In January 2023 an extreme cold spell covered shallow bays and coastal strips with ice, and photos of a “frozen Issyk-Kul” went viral — but the main water body remained open. Expect steam over the water on frosty mornings rather than an ice sheet.
Sanatoriums and spa resorts open in winter
Winter on the lake is built around Soviet-style sanatoriums and newer spa hotels, mostly on the north shore between Cholpon-Ata and Bosteri, plus a few thermal resorts near Karakol. They sell packages with three meals, doctor's consultation and procedures (mineral baths, mud, massage, physiotherapy). Names and prices change every season, so ask for the current winter price list before booking.
| Type | Where | Typical price (2026) | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic sanatorium with treatment | North shore (Cholpon-Ata – Bosteri) | ≈5,000–12,000 som/night for two with meals | Mineral baths, mud, check-ups |
| Modern spa hotel with indoor pool | Cholpon-Ata, Bosteri | ≈$60–150 per room (check) | Weekend spa, New Year packages |
| Thermal resort near Karakol | Ak-Suu (Teploklyuchenka), Jeti-Oguz | Pools from a few hundred som; rooms vary | Hot pools after skiing |
| Guesthouse in Karakol | Karakol town | ≈$20–60 per room | Ski trips on a budget |
More on thermal water in wellness and hot springs. Many sanatoriums now accept bank cards and QR payments at reception, and some sell packages through online booking platforms — a quiet example of how Issyk-Kul's tourism is going digital.
Cholpon-Ata, Karakol and the south shore in winter
Cholpon-Ata
Cholpon-Ata is the easiest winter base: sanatoriums, a few year-round cafés and the open-air petroglyph field, which is beautiful under light snow. Beach clubs and most pansionats are closed.
Karakol
Karakol becomes the ski capital: the ski base is ≈12 km uphill, day passes were 1,300–1,600 som in the last published tariff. Evenings mean Dungan cuisine and the Ak-Suu hot pools. Read skiing in Kyrgyzstan.
South shore
The south shore (Tamga, Bokonbaevo, the Skazka canyon) is almost empty in winter. It is the place for eagle-hunting demonstrations and occasional winter nomad games — in 2026 one was held near Bokonbaevo on 21 February. Few guesthouses stay open, so book ahead and expect simple heating.
New Year on Issyk-Kul
The week from about 28 December to 8 January is the only winter peak. Families from Bishkek and Almaty book sanatorium and spa-hotel packages with a gala dinner, and prices can be one and a half to two times the January weekday rate (check). Book by early December. Karakol guesthouses also fill up with skiers over the New Year holidays and the 7 January Orthodox Christmas long weekend.
How to get to Issyk-Kul in winter
- From Bishkek: by road via Boom gorge and Balykchy — Cholpon-Ata ≈250 km / 4 h, Karakol ≈400 km / ≈7 h. Marshrutkas run all year from the Western/Eastern bus stations; a private car with driver is easier with luggage. See getting around.
- From Almaty: via Bishkek (see Almaty to Bishkek), or the Asman Airlines Almaty – Karakol flight (Fri/Sun, ≈35 min, since December 2025). The Karakol – Almaty bus via Kegen (1,200 som) is declared year-round, but check the crossing in snow.
- Driving yourself: winter tyres are essential; black ice is common near Balykchy and in the Boom gorge; avoid night driving.
