| 2 | Cholpon-Ata → Karakol (+ Jeti-Oguz or Ak-Suu) | ≈150 km / 2.5 h + 50 km side trip | Karakol |

Day 1: Bishkek to Cholpon-Ata
Leave Bishkek early. If you have time, stop at Burana Tower (80 km, 30 minutes’ detour) before the Boom gorge. At Balykchy the lake opens up. In Cholpon-Ata visit the open-air petroglyph field (2nd millennium BC – Middle Ages) in the late afternoon light, swim at a public beach and walk the promenade. The northern shore is the most developed part of Issyk-Kul, with resorts, cafés and water sports.
Day 2: Karakol and a mountain valley
Drive 2.5 hours east to Karakol. See the wooden Holy Trinity Cathedral and the Dungan mosque, then have ashlan-fu for lunch. In the afternoon choose one valley: Jeti-Oguz with its red “Seven Bulls” cliffs (25 km) or the Ak-Suu hot springs (12 km). With an extra night, go up to Altyn-Arashan by 4x4 (book via arashantransfer.com).
Day 3: South shore back to Bishkek
The south shore is quieter, with fewer resorts and more open landscapes. Stop at the Skazka (Fairy Tale) canyon near Tosor, at the beaches of Tamga or Kaji-Say, and, if pre-booked, at an eagle-hunter show in Bokonbaevo (see nomad culture). Then back via Balykchy to Bishkek — a long day of 7–8 hours.

More options in getting around.
Myth: “Issyk-Kul is only for summer beach holidays.” Fact: the lake never freezes, the Karakol ski season runs December – March and many north-shore resorts keep pools and spas open in winter.
When to go
July and August are the beach season (water around 18–22 °C) and the busiest — around 2.6 million people holidayed on Issyk-Kul in 2025, and weekends fill up. June and September are calmer and cheaper, ideal for hiking. In late summer, check event dates: the 2026 World Nomad Games ran 31 August – 6 September with main events on Issyk-Kul.
