Case study: Arashan Transfer — a mountain 4×4 route, fully online

How Ala-Too Digital moved the Karakol – Altyn-Arashan 4×4 route online: fixed prices in som, card payment, e-tickets, licensed drivers, hotel partners.

Quick answerChecked 02.11.2026
  • Arashan Transfer (arashantransfer.com) is a live service of Ala-Too Digital LLC on the Karakol → Altyn-Arashan route.
  • Prices are public and fixed in som: 3,750 shared round trip, 2,750 one way, 25,000–31,000 per UAZ (11.2026).
  • Booking, card payment in som, e-mail confirmation and a refund rule replace verbal deals and cash.
  • Drivers are licensed local carriers; hotels earn a fixed, recorded commission per referred seat.
  • Aggregated results (online share, foreign share) will be published after the first full season.

What Arashan Transfer is

Arashan Transfer is a live booking service run by Ala-Too Digital LLC, the company behind Visit Ala-Too. It sells seats in shared 4×4 vehicles and whole cars on one of Kyrgyzstan's most popular short routes: from Karakol town to the Altyn-Arashan hot-spring valley, about 30 km of rough mountain road that ordinary cars cannot drive. A shared round-trip seat costs 3,750 som, a one-way seat 2,750 som, a whole UAZ-469 (up to 4 people) 25,000 som and a UAZ-452 (up to 8) 31,000 som (prices on the site, 11.2026).

We use it as the first public case for the question at the centre of our research programme: can a small, informal tourism service move fully online — and does that make it more exportable and more transparent?

Before: how the route usually works offline

Traditionally a traveller finds a driver through a guesthouse, a hostel noticeboard or the street, agrees a price verbally and pays cash. There is no booking record, no receipt, no refund rule and no way for a foreign visitor to pay in advance from home. For the driver, demand is unpredictable; for the state, the income is largely invisible — the pattern described in our page on the shadow economy in tourism.

Why it matters for exports

When a foreign visitor pays for a seat online from abroad, the service is a recorded export of tourism services. A clear price, card payment and a refund rule remove the main reasons travellers hesitate to pre-book in Kyrgyzstan. The same mechanics — public prices, online payment in local currency, electronic tickets — are what we propose to guesthouses, guides and drivers in List your property and Join as a guide or driver.

Why it matters for transparency

Every booking leaves a digital trail: date, number of seats, amount, payment channel and the partner who referred the guest. That is the raw material for official accounting, for paying hotel partners correctly and for tax reporting. It is a small-scale illustration of the hypothesis in our digital payments research: digital payment and booking records reduce the non-observed share of tourism activity.

What we measure

The service launched in autumn 2026, so we do not publish figures yet. Aggregated, anonymised results will appear in the research section after the first full season.

What other businesses can copy

  1. Publish one clear price list in som.
  2. Accept card payments and keep cash as a fallback, not the only option.
  3. Give every customer a booking code and written cancellation rules.
  4. Pay partners a fixed, recorded commission instead of informal cash.
  5. Keep a simple dashboard of bookings by date.

If you run a guesthouse, yurt camp or transport service and want the same set-up, see digital tools for guesthouses or write to us.
