- Torugart: Bishkek → pass ≈550 km, pass → Kashgar ≈180 km; 2–3 days via Naryn and Tash-Rabat.
- No independent crossing: Chinese-agency transfer + crossing permit required; Kyrgyz border-zone permit ≈$35–40.

Short answer: Torugart (3,752 m) is the classic Silk Road crossing from Kyrgyzstan to Kashgar: about 550 km from Bishkek and 180 km from the pass to Kashgar. You cannot cross it independently — the Chinese side requires transport pre-arranged by a Chinese travel agency and a crossing permit issued in China, and the post works weekdays only, roughly 8:00–19:00, closing on Chinese and Kyrgyz holidays (Eurasia.travel; verify for 2026). The easier alternative is Irkeshtam from Osh (≈260 km to the border, then ≈230 km to Kashgar).

China-side requirements for Torugart
- Chinese visa — or proof that your nationality is visa-free for China; whether unilateral visa-free schemes apply at this land port must be confirmed with the Chinese embassy (2026, check).
- Passport valid for at least six months.
- Pre-arranged transfer from the pass to Kashgar by a licensed Chinese agency; cycling and hitching on the Chinese side are not allowed. The agency also obtains the crossing permit — book at least 2–3 weeks ahead and send passport scans.
- Kyrgyz border-zone permit for the Torugart approach, ≈$35–40, 5–7 working days, arranged by a Kyrgyz operator — see border permits.
- No photography in the border zones of either country.
Coming the other way, a Kyrgyz agency driver meets you at the pass; check whether you need a Kyrgyz visa or e-visa for your nationality.
Opening days, hours and holiday closures
Both China crossings work Monday to Friday. They close for public holidays of both countries, and the exact dates are agreed by border officials, sometimes at short notice. For example, the Border Service closed Torugart and Irkeshtam on 1 January 2026; Irkeshtam reopened at 22:00 the same day and Torugart at 08:00 on 2 January (economist.kg). Avoid planning a crossing around Chinese Spring Festival, 1–5 May and the National Day week from 1 October. Fridays into China and Mondays into Kyrgyzstan have the longest truck queues — arrive at opening time.
Naryn – Tash-Rabat – Torugart route
The classic itinerary takes 2–3 days from Bishkek: Bishkek → Kochkor → Naryn (≈350 km, 5–6 h), then At-Bashy and the 15th-century caravanserai of Tash-Rabat (overnight in a yurt camp at ≈3,200 m), then early morning to the pass so you reach the Chinese post when it opens. With a permit you can stop at Chatyr-Kul lake. Many travellers add Song-Kul on the way; it fits well into a Silk Road tour.
How much does crossing Torugart cost?
| Item | Typical cost (2026, check) |
|---|---|
| Kyrgyz border-zone permit | ≈$35–40 per person |
| Driver Bishkek → Naryn → Tash-Rabat → pass (2–3 days) | ≈$90–150 per day for a 4×4, see private driver |
| Chinese agency: permit + transfer pass → Kashgar | Usually several hundred USD per vehicle; split between passengers — get quotes |
| Tash-Rabat yurt camp, half board | Mid-range, check locally |
| Chinese visa | Depends on nationality |
For a solo traveller, Torugart is usually the more expensive option; Irkeshtam via Osh is cheaper because shared transport works on both sides. From Bishkek, read Bishkek to Osh first.
Irkeshtam: the Osh–Kashgar alternative
From Osh the road climbs through the Alay range to Sary-Tash and the border (≈260 km, 4–5 h). On the Chinese side, immigration is at Ulugqat, about 132 km from the border and 97 km from Kashgar. Travellers report a shared taxi from Osh or a marshrutka to Sary-Tash, then taxis to the post; on the Chinese side, taxis or buses run from Ulugqat. Crossing before the Chinese lunch break means arriving the same evening (Against the Compass). Prices and transport change often — confirm in Osh.
Myth vs fact
Myth: “Torugart is closed to foreigners.” Fact: foreigners do cross it, but only with an agency transfer on the Chinese side and the right permits. Myth: “Border posts are open every day in summer.” Fact: both China crossings are weekday-only all year, and holiday closures can stretch over several days.
Digital tips
Chinese apps (WeChat, Alipay with a foreign card, a VPN set up before entry) are almost essential in Kashgar. Download offline maps and keep e-copies of permits; mobile coverage disappears for long stretches on both sides. Want this planned for you? Send your dates via Plan my trip.
FAQ
Can I cross Torugart independently?
No. The Chinese side requires a transfer pre-arranged by a licensed Chinese agency, which also obtains the crossing permit. Cycling or hitchhiking through is not allowed. On the Kyrgyz side you also need a border-zone permit for the approach.
Is Torugart open on weekends?
No. Torugart and Irkeshtam work Monday to Friday, roughly 8:00–19:00 on the Kyrgyz side, and close on Chinese and Kyrgyz public holidays, sometimes at short notice. Plan to reach the pass at opening time on a weekday.
How long does it take from Bishkek to Kashgar via Torugart?
Usually 2–3 days: about 550 km from Bishkek to the pass, with nights in Naryn and Tash-Rabat, then around 180 km and several hours of formalities from the pass to Kashgar.
Which is easier, Torugart or Irkeshtam?
Irkeshtam. From Osh it is about 260 km to the border and roughly 230 km more to Kashgar, and shared taxis and buses are reported on both sides. Torugart needs an agency transfer but is the more scenic Silk Road route.
Do I need a Chinese visa for Torugart?
