Flights from Bishkek to Osh

Bishkek–Osh is the busiest domestic route. Asman Airlines flies it several times a day; Avia Traffic Company and TezJet have also operated the route — check current schedules on Yandex Raspisaniya, Aviasales or the airlines' own sites, as carriers change by season. Prices are set by airlines, not the state: in April 2026 a ticket before the May holidays reached 8,820 som, after which the State Antimonopoly Service pushed the ceiling down to 5,900 and later recommended no more than 6,600 som. On 1 August 2026 Asman set its range at 4,100–6,500 som, and the regulator has proposed a fixed 4,500 som fare in exchange for fuel subsidies — not yet in force when we checked. Buy online with a card and keep the e-receipt; the flight leaves from Manas airport, about 30 km from Bishkek.

The road: Bishkek – Too-Ashuu – Toktogul – Osh

The highway climbs south from Bishkek over the Too-Ashuu pass (tunnel at about 3,200 m), drops into the wide Suusamyr valley, then crosses Ala-Bel (≈3,180 m) and the Chychkan gorge to the turquoise Toktogul reservoir. After Kara-Köl and Tash-Kömür it follows the Naryn river into the Fergana valley, through Jalal-Abad to Osh. The surface is mostly good asphalt after recent rebuilding, but expect slow trucks on the passes and roadworks.

Shared taxi to Osh

Cars to Osh and Jalal-Abad gather in Bishkek near the Western bus station and the Osh bazaar area early in the morning; they leave when full. Agree the price per seat, the drop-off point and lunch stops before loading bags. Many drivers drive fast on the passes — sit in front if you get carsick. Since September 2026 intercity passenger trips over 60 km must be done by licensed carriers, and right-hand-drive cars are excluded from licensed passenger work; ask for a driver from an official service or a registered company.

Winter: fly or wait

The road is kept open all year, but between November and March snowfalls and avalanche risk can close Too-Ashuu or Ala-Bel for hours or days. In winter, flying is the sensible choice. In summer, the drive is a highlight in itself — combine it with Osh and the south in our 14-day itinerary.

Practical tips for the road trip

Carry cash in som for snacks and fuel stops, since card terminals are patchy outside Bishkek and Jalal-Abad; Elsom, MBank and other QR wallets work in many roadside cafés. Download offline maps before Too-Ashuu, as mobile coverage drops in the Suusamyr valley and along the Chychkan gorge. If you get motion sickness, the Ala-Bel switchbacks are the hardest part. Finally, keep your passport at hand: police checkpoints near Kara-Köl and Jalal-Abad may ask for documents.

Myth vs fact

Myth: "The Bishkek–Osh road is dangerous and closed in winter." Fact: it is the country's main highway and open most of the year; closures are temporary. The real risks are speed and fatigue — choose a rested driver and avoid night driving. Need a driver or a route through the south? Use Plan my trip, and see hiring a private driver.
