Burana Tower and the Chuy valley cities
Burana is the stump of an 11th-century minaret of Balasagun, a capital of the Karakhanid state. You can climb a narrow internal staircase to the top, walk among balbal stone figures and see a small museum. Ak-Beshim (Suyab) was a major trading city where Buddhist, Christian and later Islamic communities coexisted; Krasnaya Rechka (Navekat) has remains of Buddhist temples. Burana is an easy half-day trip from Bishkek or a stop on the way to Issyk-Kul (see the 7-day itinerary).
Tash-Rabat: the caravanserai in the mountains
Tash-Rabat is a stone building with a domed central hall and some 30 rooms, hidden in a side valley at about 3,200 m on the route to Kashgar via the Torugart pass. It is usually dated to the 15th century, though some researchers suggest older origins. Yurt camps next to it operate June–September; nearby Chatyr-Kul lake requires a border-zone permit (see border permits).
Osh, Sulaiman-Too and Uzgen
Osh is over 3,000 years old according to local tradition and was a key market of the Fergana valley. Sulaiman-Too, a five-peaked rock in the city centre, has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries, with petroglyphs, cave shrines and a museum inside the mountain. In Uzgen, 55 km east, a 27-metre Karakhanid minaret and three mausoleums show some of Central Asia’s finest carved brickwork.
