Tourism as an Export: Kyrgyzstan's Travel Services in Numbers

Kyrgyzstan exported ≈$1.098 bn of tourism services in 2025 (+8.1%); foreigners spend ≈1.9× more than residents abroad. How travel exports are measured.

Quick answerChecked 02.11.2026
  • Tourism service exports reached ≈$1.098 bn in 2025 (+8.1% y/y), per Natstatcom via the Ministry of Economy.
  • H1 2026: foreigners spent $528.3 mln in Kyrgyzstan vs $284.8 mln spent by residents abroad — surplus ≈1.9×.
  • H1 2025 was almost identical: $529.5 mln exports vs $283.9 mln imports.
  • In the balance of payments, tourist spending is recorded under the 'Travel' services item.
  • Card and QR data help statisticians estimate travel exports; cash spending must be modelled.

When a tourist from Germany pays for a guesthouse in Karakol, Kyrgyzstan is exporting a service. In 2025 such exports of tourism services reached about $1.098 billion, up 8.1% on 2024. In the first half of 2026 foreign visitors spent $528.3 million in the country, while Kyrgyz residents spent $284.8 million abroad — a surplus of roughly 1.9 times. For a country with a large trade deficit in goods, this is one of the few service lines that consistently earns more than it spends.

Why is tourism counted as an export?

International statistics (the IMF Balance of Payments Manual, BPM6) treat everything that non-residents buy during a visit of less than a year — accommodation, food, local transport, guides, souvenirs, park fees — as an export of the visited country, recorded under the services item “Travel”. The tourist does not take a product home, but foreign currency enters the economy exactly as if a product had been shipped abroad. International passenger tickets are recorded separately under transport.

How big are Kyrgyzstan's tourism exports?

PeriodExports (foreigners in KR)Imports (residents abroad)RatioSource
2025, full year≈$1.098 bn (+8.1%)——Natstatcom, Ministry of Economy

H1 2026$528.3 mln$284.8 mln≈1.9×Natstatcom via 24.kg

Two observations stand out. First, exports passed the $1 billion mark in 2025. Second, the first half of 2026 was flat compared with the first half of 2025 despite strong growth in arrivals — a gap that deserves explanation: lower average spending, a shift to short cross-border trips, exchange-rate effects or more spending not captured by the data. Context on visitor numbers is on the tourism statistics page.

How are travel exports measured?

No country can observe every tourist purchase. Statistical agencies combine several sources:

Natstatcom and the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic (NBKR, which compiles the balance of payments) may publish different values for the same year because of methodology and revisions. When citing, always name the agency and the indicator.

Myth vs fact

Why digitalization matters for exports

Our research hypothesis is that digitalization raises measured exports in two ways. Directly, online visibility brings more foreign guests to small providers. Indirectly, card and QR payments produce transaction data that improve estimates. Since October 2025 Kazakh visitors can pay in Kyrgyzstan through the Kaspi.kz app by scanning ELQR codes — a channel that turns cash spending by the largest source market into recorded transactions. See digital payments in tourism.

There is also a leakage effect: when a guest prepays through a foreign online travel agency, the commission stays abroad. Local platforms and direct digital payments keep more value in the country — one argument for strengthening domestic channels such as listing on visitalatoo.com.

The 2030 target

Tourism rose from 3.2% of GDP in 2021 to 3.8% in 2025; the government aims for 7% by 2030. Reaching that requires both more visitors and higher recorded spending per visitor — which in turn means bringing informal providers into the digital economy (see shadow economy in tourism).

FAQ

How much does Kyrgyzstan earn from tourism exports?

About $1.098 billion in 2025, up 8.1% year on year, according to Natstatcom data published by the Ministry of Economy. In the first half of 2026 foreign visitors spent $528.3 million.

Why is tourist spending considered an export?

Under IMF balance of payments rules, goods and services bought by non-residents during short visits are exports of the visited country, recorded under 'Travel'. Foreign currency flows in as if goods were shipped abroad.

Does Kyrgyzstan have a surplus in tourism?

Yes. In the first half of 2026 foreigners spent $528.3 million in Kyrgyzstan while residents spent $284.8 million abroad — about 1.9 times more inflow than outflow. The ratio was similar in the first half of 2025.

Why do tourism export figures differ between sources?

Natstatcom and the National Bank use different methods and revision schedules, and media mix full-year and half-year data. Always cite the agency, indicator and period.
