- Currency: Kyrgyz som (KGS); roughly 87–88 som per US dollar in 2026 (check the current NBKR rate).
- Foreign Visa and Mastercard work in Bishkek hotels, supermarkets and ATMs; in villages, yurt camps and marshrutkas you need cash.
- Locals pay mostly by QR code (national standard ELQR, launched ≈2020) from bank apps like MBank, O!Dengi or Optima — tourists usually cannot without a local account.
- Russian Mir cards stopped working in Kyrgyzstan on 5 April 2024 and were still not restored as of autumn 2026.
Short answer: bring a Visa or Mastercard plus some clean US dollars or euros. In Bishkek, Osh, Karakol and Cholpon-Ata you can pay by card in most hotels, supermarkets and restaurants and withdraw som at ATMs; the rate is about 87–88 som per $1 in 2026 (check). Outside towns — guesthouses, yurt camps, marshrutkas, bazaars — cash is still king. Kyrgyz residents now pay mostly by QR code, which is the clearest sign of how fast payments have gone digital.

Can tourists use QR payments in Kyrgyzstan?
QR is the default way locals pay: the national standard ELQR lets a customer of one bank scan any merchant's code, and transaction volume has passed 1 trillion som. Popular apps include MBank, O!Dengi, Optima, Bakai and others. The catch for tourists: you need a Kyrgyz bank account or wallet, which normally requires a local phone number and ID verification, sometimes in person. Some banks open accounts for non-residents (check with the bank). For a short trip, cards plus cash are simpler. Since 2026 the Elcard system is integrated with Alipay+ so Kyrgyz users can pay by QR abroad; whether foreign Alipay+ wallets can pay Kyrgyz QR codes is not yet widely confirmed (check before travel). Our research note digital payments in tourism explains why this matters for the country.
ATMs and exchange
- ATMs of major banks (Optima, Demir, KICB, RSK and others) accept Visa and Mastercard; some dispense dollars as well as som. Check the fee shown on screen and decline "conversion at the ATM rate".
- Exchange offices ("Обмен валют") are everywhere in Bishkek and Karakol and usually give better rates than banks for USD, EUR, RUB and KZT. Notes should be undamaged.
- Withdraw enough before heading to Song-Kul, Naryn or Arslanbob — ATMs there are rare or empty.
Russian and Kazakh travellers: Mir, tenge, rubles
Mir cards stopped working in Kyrgyzstan on 5 April 2024 after the local processing centre suspended them because of US sanctions on Russia's NSPK; as of 2026 the government was still discussing alternatives. Russians typically bring cash (rubles exchange easily), use UnionPay cards of Kyrgyz or third-country banks, or open a local card. Kazakh cards (Kaspi, Halyk) on Visa/Mastercard work at terminals and ATMs; tenge exchanges at every booth.
How much cash do I need?
Plan to pay cash for around 50–70% of a typical itinerary outside Bishkek: guesthouses 1,500–3,500 som per person with breakfast, yurt stays, horses and drivers. See full budgets in travel cost.
Tipping and receipts
Restaurants often add a 10–15% service charge; check the bill. Guides and drivers appreciate tips of 5–10%. Ask for a fiscal receipt (чек) — electronic receipts and QR-coded cheques are part of the government's push to bring cash businesses into the official economy.
Myth vs fact
Myth: "Kyrgyzstan is a cash-only country." Fact: cities are among the most QR-driven in the region; it's the mountains that run on cash. Plan both — and see which apps help in travel apps for Kyrgyzstan.
FAQ
Can I use my Visa or Mastercard in Kyrgyzstan?
Yes, in cities. Visa and Mastercard work in most Bishkek, Osh and Karakol hotels, supermarkets, chain restaurants and bank ATMs. In villages, yurt camps, bazaars and minibuses you need cash in som, so withdraw before heading into the mountains.
Do Mir cards work in Kyrgyzstan in 2026?
No. Mir card servicing stopped on 5 April 2024 after sanctions on Russia's NSPK, and as of autumn 2026 it had not been restored. Russians bring cash, use UnionPay cards or open a card at a Kyrgyz bank.
What is the exchange rate of the Kyrgyz som?
About 87–88 som per US dollar in 2026; check the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic rate before you travel. Exchange offices in Bishkek usually offer better rates than banks and accept USD, EUR, RUB and KZT.
Can tourists pay with QR codes in Kyrgyzstan?
Usually not without a local bank app. QR payments run through the national ELQR standard and need a Kyrgyz account in MBank, O!Dengi, Optima or similar. Some banks open accounts for foreigners; for a short trip, cards and cash are easier.
Should I bring dollars to Kyrgyzstan?
Yes, a few hundred clean US dollars or euros is a good backup. They exchange easily in every town and some tour services quote prices in dollars. Damaged or old-series notes may be refused or exchanged at a worse rate.
