What has changed at Karakol airport, and what is still only a plan

Karakol airport after the upgrade: 3,750 m runway, ILS, first A320 on 10 Aug 2026. Which flights exist, what's only planned, and how to reach the slopes.

If you want to fly into Karakol from Almaty or Bishkek, look up Asman Airlines fares to IKG a month or two ahead: the flights are seasonal, there aren't many of them, and the winter schedule tends to be announced late. Karakol's airport changed a lot in 2026. The runway was extended from 2,450 to 3,750 metres, new lights and an instrument landing system (ILS) went in, and on 10 August an Airbus A320 landed here for the first time. That was a technical flight with no passengers on board. There are no scheduled flights from Moscow, Dubai or Istanbul yet, so below we keep what already works separate from what is still a plan.

What is already true

The airport has been open since December 2024, when President Sadyr Japarov reopened it after the first rebuild. Asman Airlines started flying in from Bishkek that same month, and from Osh in January 2025. Winter 2025/26 brought the two flights most travellers care about: Almaty to Karakol from 5 December 2025 on Fridays and Sundays (about 35 minutes, from 6,500 som, roughly $75), and Bishkek to Karakol four times a week at a subsidised 4,000 som from 4 January 2026.

The second round of construction finished in summer 2026. According to the operator, Airports of Kyrgyzstan, the 3,750 m runway can now take the A320 and the Boeing 737 family, where before it mostly handled Dash 8 Q400 turboprops and business jets. On 22 September 2026 the airport hosted the country's first Business Aviation Summit. Business jets, helicopters, a medical COMAC and an Asman Dash 8 were parked on the apron, and the guests included Airbus, Bombardier, Comlux and private jet operators from Kazakhstan. The summit was about private and business aviation, and no new scheduled routes were announced there.

What is still only a plan

The operator says it wants Karakol to become the air gateway to Issyk-Kul and is talking to airlines about flights from Russia, other CIS countries and the Middle East. In June 2026 a direct Sharjah to Karakol flight for winter 2026/27 was discussed with a UAE delegation (economist.kg links it to Air Arabia). As of 3 November 2026 we couldn't find that flight, or any other new international route, on sale. We also don't know yet whether Asman's Almaty flight will return this winter, even though it ran last season. We'll update this page once a schedule appears.

How to fly there now

When the seasonal flights are running, the quickest way to Karakol is Asman Airlines from Almaty or Bishkek. If nothing flies on your dates, land at Manas or Almaty and go overland. From Bishkek it's about 400 km and 6–7 hours, and from Almaty through the Kegen–Karkyra border it's 380–400 km and 7–9 hours, with a direct bus for 1,200 som. The details are in our guides Bishkek to Karakol, Almaty to Karakol and Manas airport. Tamchy airport on the north shore works mostly in summer, and in 2026 FlyArystan flew there from Almaty between 18 June and 30 August.

From the airport to town and the slopes

Wikipedia puts the airport about 2.5 km northeast of Karakol, so a guesthouse in the centre is ten to fifteen minutes away. The Karakol ski base is about 12 km by road from the town centre, and Jyrgalan, where Ala-Too Resort is being built, is about 60–65 km away on a road that is still being finished. With skis or kids, it's easier to book a car to meet your flight. Airport pickups and rides to Altyn-Arashan, the ski base and Jyrgalan are available through arashantransfer.com. To be upfront, that's a project run by the same team as Visit Ala-Too.

What this changes for skiers and summer visitors

For skiers from Almaty, a 35-minute flight instead of 7–9 hours on the road turns Karakol into a weekend trip, and with Ala-Too Resort due to open its first phase on 1 December 2026, demand for those seats will probably grow. The long runway is what direct flights from far-off cities need, but nobody is selling them yet, so it's too early to plan this winter around one. In summer Karakol is closer than Tamchy to the east shore, Jeti-Oguz and the trekking valleys, and direct flights here would save a full day of driving from Bishkek. For now, a summer trip to Issyk-Kul usually still starts at Manas or Almaty.

FAQ

Are there international flights to Karakol right now?

The only international flight that has actually operated is Asman Airlines from Almaty, from 5 December 2025 on Fridays and Sundays, about 35 minutes. As of 3 November 2026 the schedule for the new winter hasn't been announced. Flights from Russia, the UAE and elsewhere are only being discussed.

Did an Airbus A320 really land in Karakol?

Yes. On 10 August 2026 an A320 made a technical flight after the runway was extended to 3,750 metres. There are no passenger A320 flights to Karakol yet.

What was the aviation summit in Karakol?

Business Aviation Summit 2026, the first in Kyrgyzstan, took place at the airport on 22 September 2026. Airports of Kyrgyzstan hosted it, and Airbus, Bombardier, COMAC, Asman Airlines and business jet operators took part. It was about business aviation and investment, and no new scheduled routes were announced.

Will there be a flight from Dubai or Sharjah to Karakol this winter?

A Sharjah to Karakol flight for winter 2026/27 was discussed with a UAE delegation in June 2026. As of 3 November 2026 there are no dates, schedule or tickets, so don't build a trip around it yet.

How do I get from Karakol airport to the ski base or Jyrgalan?

Central Karakol is about 2.5 km away, the Karakol ski base about 12 km by road from there, and Jyrgalan with Ala-Too Resort 60–65 km. With skis it's easier to book a car to meet your flight, for example through arashantransfer.com, which is run by our own team.

How is Karakol airport different from Tamchy?

Tamchy is on the north shore of Issyk-Kul near Cholpon-Ata and mostly handles summer flights, such as FlyArystan from Almaty in June–August 2026. Karakol is at the eastern end of the lake, closer to the mountains and ski bases, and also operates in winter.
