Sary-Chelek is a deep alpine lake about 7.5 km long at roughly 1,870 m in the Chatkal range of western Kyrgyzstan, protected as a state nature reserve since 1959 and a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1978. The base village, Arkyt, is about 15 km from the lake and 10–12 hours by road from Bishkek or 6–7 hours from Osh. It is remote, which keeps it quiet: most visitors are Kyrgyz families in summer and a small number of foreign travellers.

Why go to Sary-Chelek

The lake fills a winding basin among steep slopes of spruce, fir, walnut and wild fruit trees, with six smaller lakes in the surrounding reserve. The water is a deep blue-green, and autumn turns the forest yellow and red. Walking trails lead to viewpoints and the smaller lakes, and the reserve is home to bears, lynx and many bird species. The reserve is also a component of the transnational Western Tien Shan World Heritage property.
