Ala-Archa national park

The classic escape: granite peaks, juniper forest and trails starting at about 2,100 m. Since May 2025 private cars no longer drive into the park; you switch to electric vehicles at the gate (entry for an e-vehicle is 880 som since 8 June 2026, adult ticket 250 som). A new cable car was announced at 600 som per ride — check if it's running. Popular walks: the Ak-Sai waterfall (4–5 h return) and the trail towards the Ratsek hut (full day, ≈3,300 m). Details: Ala-Archa guide.

Tip: start before 9:00 on summer weekends — the gate queue and the shuttle line grow quickly by late morning, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in July.

Burana tower

Near Tokmok, Burana is the surviving minaret of Balasagun, an 11th-century Karakhanid capital. Climb the narrow stairs, then walk among the balbal stone figures and the small museum. Combine with lunch in Tokmok; 2–3 hours on site and road is enough. It also makes a good first stop on the way to Karakol.

Issyk-Ata and Alamedin: hot springs

Issyk-Ata, south of Kant, has a Soviet-era sanatorium with thermal pools and a rock with a carved Buddha image from the early medieval period. Alamedin gorge, closer to the city, has small resorts with warm springs and easy walks along the river. Both work well in winter, when the mountains are snowy but the roads stay open.

Kegeti and Konorchek

Kegeti is a green gorge east of Bishkek with a 25-metre waterfall about 1–2 hours' walk from the road end. Konorchek is the opposite — red, eroded clay canyons near the Boom gorge that look like a small Utah. The hike takes 3–5 hours with little shade, so avoid midsummer heat and carry 2 litres of water. A car with driver or a weekend group tour is the practical way in.

Chon-Kemin valley

A long valley of spruce forests, rivers and guesthouses about 2.5–3 hours east, good for horse riding and rafting in summer. It is a long day trip — better as an overnight. See Chon-Kemin.

How to get around: tips

Myth vs fact

Myth: "There's nothing to do around Bishkek — head straight to Issyk-Kul." Fact: within two hours of the capital you can hike to glaciers, soak in hot springs and see medieval Silk Road sites. Add a day trip to the start or end of our 7-day itinerary, or plan it with us via Plan my trip.
