Getting guides ready for off-piste winter, and listing your avalanche course for free

Ala-Too Resort in Jyrgalan is planned to open on 1 December 2026. What an off-piste guide needs to know, where to train, and how to list your course for free.

The first phase of Ala-Too Resort in Jyrgalan, with 6 lifts and more than 47 km of pistes, is planned to open on 1 December 2026. Even if not everything runs on day one, more people will reach the backcountry next to the lifts than the Ak-Suu district has ever seen, and some of them will come to guides and instructors for freeride. There is still no public avalanche bulletin in the country, so client safety rests on what the guide knows and can do. We do two things: we tell travellers about avalanche courses for free, and we're building a network of trained guides for winter requests. If you run a course or guide off-piste yourself, write to hello@visitalatoo.com or WhatsApp +996 777 998 882.

What you get

How it works

  1. Send a description. To hello@visitalatoo.com: course name or your guide profile, programme, location, dates, price, language and instructor qualifications.
  2. Call. We clarify details and confirm the qualifications you listed.
  3. Publish. The course goes live and is linked from the travellers' safety page. Guides are added to the network.
  4. Requests. We send people who want training to you, and pass winter off-piste requests to guides in the network.

What an off-piste guide needs to know

Here is our view of how avalanche training is usually structured in international programmes. Level names differ by country, but the logic is similar.

LevelWhat it coversWho needs it
Companion rescueFast transceiver search, probing, shovelling in pairs and groupsEveryone who leaves the piste, including clients
Basic avalanche courseSnowpack basics, danger scale, terrain choice, group rulesInstructors taking clients off-piste near the lifts
Advanced courseSnow observations, tests, season-long planning, group leadershipGuides running ski tours and freeride days
Professional qualificationFull mountain guide training with exams, for example to the IFMGA standardThose working with international clients, heli- and cat-skiing

Companion rescue is the base for everything else. A guide should get from first signal to an uncovered face on a single transceiver in a few minutes, and only practice gets you there. With no bulletin, you build your own forecast: keep notes on snowfall and wind from the start of the season, watch for fresh avalanches and swap observations with colleagues. Weak base layers in the Tian Shan persist for weeks, so what happened in November still matters in February. And five minutes of briefing at the lift: transceiver check, probe and shovel, one at a time, who's in charge, and the 112 number.

Why this is urgent

The resort operator, Ala-Too Resort OJSC, is building a three-zone cluster (Jyrgalan, Ak-Bulak and Boz-Uchuk), with lifts by Austria's Doppelmayr. The president announced the first phase on 30 October 2026. Which lifts and runs open on day one, and how the resort's avalanche service will work, hasn't been published. In October the resort announced a purchase of three snowmobiles with rescue sleds, but nothing has been said publicly about ski patrol or avalanche control. Avalanches here have already killed tourists, including in the Boz-Uchuk gorge in 2019, where a group was skiing without an instructor.

What we found about courses

Some training happens inside clubs and companies and is never advertised. If you run such a course, tell us about it: write to hello@visitalatoo.com or WhatsApp +996 777 998 882. We'll list it for free so clients can find you more easily.

This page doesn't replace training with a certified instructor and isn't legal advice.

FAQ

What does it cost to list a course on visitalatoo.com, and is there a commission?

Nothing, and there's no commission. Send the programme, location, dates, price, language and instructor qualifications, and we'll list the course for free and link to it from our travellers' safety page.

Do participants pay through you or directly?

Directly to you. We publish the description and contacts, and participants sign up and pay with you.

What documents does a guide need to join the winter network?

A passport, proof of avalanche training or qualifications if you have them, and references. Registration as a sole trader or a patent is preferred but not required at the start. We don't give tax advice and will point you to the tax service.

How long does listing take?

Usually a few days after you send the description and we've had a call.

What if nobody signs up for the course?

We don't promise participant numbers. Listing is free, so you lose nothing, and with Ala-Too Resort opening, interest in freeride in the Ak-Suu district is likely to grow.

In which languages can a course be listed?

We publish descriptions in English and Russian. Tell us which language the training itself is in; foreign clients need to know.

Where can I take an avalanche course in Kyrgyzstan?

As of November 2026 we found no regular public courses with schedules and prices. The nearest open example is a four-day course at Shymbulak near Almaty via Explore-Share. If you know a course in Kyrgyzstan, write to hello@visitalatoo.com.
