## Day 1 — Bishkek and Ala-Archa National Park

Land at Manas airport (30 km from the city, see [airport guide](https://visitalatoo.com/guide/manas-airport/)), buy a local SIM and head to [Ala-Archa](https://visitalatoo.com/destinations/ala-archa/), 40 km south. A 2–3 hour walk to the Ak-Sai waterfall viewpoint is a good acclimatisation hike. Since 2025 the park uses electric shuttles from the gate (check the current rule). Evening: Osh Bazaar or Ala-Too square in [Bishkek](https://visitalatoo.com/destinations/bishkek/).

## Day 2 — Burana Tower and the north shore of Issyk-Kul

Drive east; 80 km from Bishkek stop at Burana Tower, an 11th-century minaret of the Silk Road city Balasagun (part of the UNESCO Silk Roads listing — more in [Silk Road sites](https://visitalatoo.com/experiences/silk-road/)). Continue through the Boom gorge to [Cholpon-Ata](https://visitalatoo.com/destinations/cholpon-ata/). Swim in July–August; at sunset visit the open-air petroglyph field.

## Day 3 — Cholpon-Ata to Karakol

A short 2.5-hour drive along the lake. In [Karakol](https://visitalatoo.com/destinations/karakol/) see the wooden Holy Trinity Cathedral and the Dungan mosque built without nails, then try ashlan-fu at the bazaar.

## Day 4 — Altyn-Arashan hot springs or Jeti-Oguz

Option A: [Altyn-Arashan](https://visitalatoo.com/destinations/altyn-arashan/) valley at ≈2,600 m with hot springs — a 14 km rough road from Ak-Suu, done by Soviet 4x4 (transfers: [arashantransfer.com](https://arashantransfer.com)) or a 5–6 hour hike up. Stay overnight in a guesthouse or return. Option B: Karakol valley day hike. Fit trekkers can extend this into the [Ala-Kul trek](https://visitalatoo.com/experiences/trekking-ala-kul/) (adds 2 days).

## Day 5 — South shore: Jeti-Oguz, Skazka canyon, eagle hunters

Drive west along the quieter south shore. Stop at the red rocks of [Jeti-Oguz](https://visitalatoo.com/destinations/jeti-oguz-skazka/) (“Seven Bulls”), then the Skazka (Fairy Tale) canyon. In Bokonbaevo, pre-book an eagle-hunter demonstration (see [nomad culture](https://visitalatoo.com/experiences/nomad-culture-eagle-hunting/)). Overnight in a lakeside yurt camp.

## Day 6 — Kochkor and Song-Kul lake

The longest day. In Kochkor visit a felt (shyrdak) workshop, then climb the Kalmak-Ashuu pass (≈3,400 m) to [Song-Kul](https://visitalatoo.com/destinations/song-kul/), a 3,016 m lake surrounded by summer pastures. Overnight in a [yurt camp](https://visitalatoo.com/experiences/yurt-stays/) with dinner and breakfast; nights are cold even in August. Optional 1–2 hour horse ride (see [horse trekking](https://visitalatoo.com/experiences/horse-trekking/)).

## Day 7 — Back to Bishkek

Sunrise at the lake, then ≈6 hours back via Kochkor and Balykchy. Evening flight or one more night in Bishkek.

## What to pre-book

- Driver for days 2–7 (the main cost and the main source of quality).

- Song-Kul yurt camp and Bokonbaevo eagle show — limited capacity in July–August.

- Karakol guesthouse in peak season and around the World Nomad Games (31 Aug – 6 Sep 2026 edition was on Issyk-Kul).

- Many guesthouses now take bookings online and payments by QR — handy, but keep cash for villages (see [money and payments](https://visitalatoo.com/guide/money-payments/)).

## When this route works and alternatives

The full loop works mid-June to mid-September. In May and October Song-Kul may be snowbound — replace day 6–7 with [Chon-Kemin](https://visitalatoo.com/destinations/chon-kemin/). In winter, replace the south shore and Song-Kul with skiing in Karakol (see [ski Kyrgyzstan](https://visitalatoo.com/experiences/ski-kyrgyzstan/)). Want more time? The [10-day itinerary](https://visitalatoo.com/itineraries/kyrgyzstan-10-days/) adds Naryn and Tash-Rabat. ## FAQ

### Is 7 days enough for Kyrgyzstan?

Yes, for the north: 7 days cover Bishkek, Issyk-Kul, Karakol, the south shore and Song-Kul (≈1,250 km). The south (Osh, Arslanbob) and Tash-Rabat need 10–14 days; see the longer itineraries.

### How much does a 7-day trip to Kyrgyzstan cost?

About $350–500 per person on a budget, $700–1,100 mid-range with a shared private driver, and $1,400–2,000 in comfort, excluding flights (as of 2026). Splitting a driver among 3–4 people makes the mid-range option good value.

### Can I do this route by public transport?

Mostly yes: marshrutkas link Bishkek, Cholpon-Ata, Karakol, Bokonbaevo and Kochkor. Song-Kul has no public transport — you need a shared taxi or tour from Kochkor. Expect slower days and less flexibility.

### When can you visit Song-Kul?

Yurt camps usually operate from mid-June to mid-September. The road over the Kalmak-Ashuu pass can be snowy in May and October, and nights at 3,016 m drop near freezing even in summer.

### Do I need a 4x4 for this route?

Not for the main roads, which are paved. A 4x4 or high-clearance car is recommended for Song-Kul, and Altyn-Arashan requires an off-road vehicle or hiking.
