## Karakol Ski Base 2026/27: prices, lifts and season

Karakol Ski Base lies in the Kashka-Suu valley above the town of [Karakol](https://visitalatoo.com/destinations/karakol/), on the north slopes of the Terskey Ala-Too range. The lower station is at roughly 2,300 m and lifts reach above 3,000 m, so snow is reliable from late December to March. Runs are mostly red and blue on forest-lined slopes, with ungroomed tree skiing between them — this is what earned Karakol its reputation among freeriders.

The 2025/26 season opened on 6 December 2025 with the JARYK FEST festival. Opening in 2026 is expected in December as well, depending on snowfall. The resort has published daily passes; local media reported 1,300 som (weekday) and 1,600 som (weekend) in 2025, and residents have publicly pushed for lower local prices — so tariffs may change. Treat any 2026/27 figure as provisional until the resort posts it.

## How to get to Karakol ski resort from Bishkek

By road it is about 400 km along the north shore of [Issyk-Kul](https://visitalatoo.com/destinations/issyk-kul/): 6 hours in summer, 7 or more in winter. Options are a shared taxi or minibus (marshrutka) from Bishkek’s Eastern bus station, or a private car with driver — the most practical choice for groups with ski bags. In January the Boom gorge and the Balykchy stretch can be icy; avoid night driving. See [getting around Kyrgyzstan](https://visitalatoo.com/guide/getting-around/) for transport details.

## How to get to Karakol from Almaty

This is the route most visitors from Kazakhstan use, and it has changed a lot recently:

- **Flight:** since 5 December 2025 Asman Airlines has operated Almaty – Karakol on Fridays and Sundays, flight time about 35 minutes. It is ideal for a weekend ski trip — check the 2026/27 schedule.

- **Bus via Kegen:** since 7 September 2025 a direct bus runs Karakol – Almaty through the Kegen – Karkyra border crossing for 1,200 som, declared year-round.

- **Via Bishkek:** Almaty → Bishkek (≈240 km, 4–5 h, see [Almaty to Bishkek](https://visitalatoo.com/guide/almaty-to-bishkek/)) and then 7 h east. Only makes sense if you want to combine Bishkek.

> **Myth:** “Kegen crossing only works in summer.” **Fact:** the Karakol – Almaty bus via Kegen – Karkyra is declared year-round since September 2025; still check weather on the pass before travelling.

## Ski resorts near Bishkek

If you only have a weekend in [Bishkek](https://visitalatoo.com/destinations/bishkek/), these bases are closer. They are smaller and suit beginners, families and day trips.

| Base | From Bishkek | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Chunkurchak | ≈35 km / 40 min | Beginners, tubing, families |
| Kashka-Suu | ≈30 km / 40 min | Day trips, night skiing (check) |
| Orlovka | ≈100 km / 1.5 h | Longer runs, weekends |
| Too-Ashuu pass | ≈130 km / 2.5–3 h | High altitude (≈3,000 m), long season |

Day passes at these bases usually fall within the same 1,000–2,000 som range as Karakol; check on the spot.

## Karakol vs Shymbulak: which is better?

Shymbulak, 25 km from Almaty, is Central Asia’s best-known resort with modern gondolas and a big hotel base. Karakol is wilder, quieter and much cheaper: a day pass costs roughly a third to a half of a Shymbulak pass, and accommodation in Karakol town is cheaper too. Shymbulak wins on lift infrastructure and access (a city on your doorstep); Karakol wins on price, empty slopes and off-piste. Many skiers from Almaty now combine both in one trip thanks to the Asman flight. For freeride and cat-skiing, see [freeride and cat-skiing](https://visitalatoo.com/experiences/freeride-cat-skiing/); for families who want snow without skis, see [winter snow holiday](https://visitalatoo.com/experiences/winter-snow-holiday/).

## Practical tips for a ski trip

- Bring cash in som: many rental shops and cafés prefer cash or local QR payments; card terminals at the base exist but can fail. See [money and payments](https://visitalatoo.com/guide/money-payments/).

- A local SIM or eSIM is useful for taxi apps and the resort’s chats — see [eSIM and SIM](https://visitalatoo.com/guide/esim-sim-card/).

- Peak days are weekends and the New Year holidays (1–10 January): book guesthouses early.

- Off-piste: carry avalanche gear and go with a local guide.

- Combine skiing with the hot springs of [Altyn-Arashan](https://visitalatoo.com/destinations/altyn-arashan/) (transfer: [arashantransfer.com](https://arashantransfer.com)) or Jeti-Oguz.
