**Issyk-Kul is a 182-km saline alpine lake at 1,607 m in north-east Kyrgyzstan, 250 km (about 4 hours) from Bishkek by road.** It is the country's main holiday region: roughly 2.6 million people rested on its shores in 2025, mostly from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Russia. The lake never freezes thanks to its depth (about 668 m) and slight salinity, so the shore is visited in winter too — for skiing near [Karakol](https://visitalatoo.com/destinations/karakol/) and hot springs.

## Why go to Issyk-Kul

Two very different holidays share one lake. The **north shore** (Balykchy – Cholpon-Ata – Bosteri – Tyup) is a classic resort coast with sandy beaches, sanatoriums, water parks and evening promenades. The **south shore** (Barskoon – Tamga – Bokonbaevo – Kaji-Say) is drier and wilder: red canyons such as Skazka, yurt camps on empty beaches, eagle hunters near Bokonbaevo and gorges that lead into the Terskey Ala-Too. On clear days both shores have snow peaks of 4,000–5,000 m above the water.

## How to get to Issyk-Kul from Bishkek and Almaty

All road routes from Bishkek go east through Tokmok and the Boom gorge to Balykchy, where the road splits into the north and south shores. From Almaty there are two options: via Bishkek (≈480 km to Cholpon-Ata) or directly through the Kegen – Karkyra border crossing to Karakol. Since 7 September 2025 a direct Karakol – Almaty bus runs via Kegen for about 1,200 som, declared year-round.

| Route / mode | Distance | Time | Typical price (2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bishkek → Cholpon-Ata, marshrutka | ≈250 km | 4–4.5 h | 350–500 som |
| Bishkek → Cholpon-Ata, shared taxi (seat) | ≈250 km | 3.5 h | 700–1,000 som |
| Bishkek → Karakol, marshrutka / bus | ≈400 km | 6–7 h | 500–750 som |
| Bishkek → Karakol, private car with driver | ≈400 km | 5.5–6 h | 7,000–10,000 som per car |
| Bishkek → Karakol, flight (Asman Airlines, seasonal) | — | ≈1 h | 4,000 som (subsidized fare, winter 2026) |
| Almaty → Karakol, bus via Kegen | ≈380 km | 7–9 h incl. border | ≈1,200 som |
| Bishkek → Bokonbaevo (south shore), marshrutka | ≈270 km | 4.5–5 h | 400–550 som |

Marshrutkas and buses leave from Bishkek's Western bus station; in summer extra departures run from the Eastern station. Fares change often — confirm on the day. ## Where to stay on Issyk-Kul and how much it costs

| Type | Where | Typical price, high season 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Guesthouse / homestay | Any village, Karakol, Bokonbaevo | 1,500–3,000 som per person with breakfast |
| Yurt camp | South shore beaches | 2,000–4,000 som per person with meals |
| Pension / sanatorium (full board) | North shore | 3,500–9,000 som per person |
| Modern resort hotel | Cholpon-Ata, Bosteri, Kara-Oi | $100–300 per room |

Prices in July–August are 30–60% higher than in June or September, and the most popular resorts sell out for weekends; online booking platforms now list most sizable properties, while small guesthouses often still confirm by WhatsApp and take cash or QR payments through Kyrgyz bank apps. A realistic daily budget is $30–45 for a backpacker, $70–120 for mid-range travel. See [travel costs in Kyrgyzstan](https://visitalatoo.com/guide/travel-cost/) and [money and payments](https://visitalatoo.com/guide/money-payments/).

## Permits and fees

No permit is needed to visit the lake itself. Entry tickets are charged at protected areas such as Karakol National Park, Jeti-Oguz and Skazka canyon (usually a few hundred som; check on site). Areas south of Karakol towards the Chinese border, such as Enilchek and Sary-Jaz, need a [border-zone permit](https://visitalatoo.com/guide/border-permits/).

## Myth vs fact

> **Myth:** “Issyk-Kul is a summer-only destination.” **Fact:** the lake does not freeze, and from December to March Karakol runs one of Central Asia's best-value ski areas, while hot springs such as Altyn-Arashan work all year.

> **Myth:** “The lake is salty like the sea.” **Fact:** salinity is only about 0.6% — roughly a fifth of ocean water — so it feels only slightly salty.

## Tips

- Carry cash in som for villages; cards and QR work in Cholpon-Ata and Karakol.

- Strong UV at 1,600 m: use sunscreen even when the air feels cool.

- Roads are busy on summer Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons — travel midweek if you can.

- A [3-day Issyk-Kul itinerary](https://visitalatoo.com/itineraries/issyk-kul-3-days/) covers both shores; the [7-day Kyrgyzstan route](https://visitalatoo.com/itineraries/kyrgyzstan-7-days/) adds Song-Kul.
